The NTU Experimental Farm held a rice transplanting event and announced plans for its centennial celebration.

The Experimental Farm of the College of Bioresources and Agriculture at National Taiwan University (NTU Farm) kicked off its year-long 100th-anniversary celebration on March 15th. A year of activities and events will highlight NTU Farm’s past and propel NTU Farm into its second century. Hong Chwan-Yang, Director of NTU Farm, led the farm colleagues to hold a rice transplanting event. Director Hong invited President Chen Wen-Chang and Dean Lin Yu-Pin, teachers and students of Taipei Municipal Mingchuan Elementary School, and the University’s Kindergarten to the paddy fields to experience rice transplanting together. Before transplanting the rice seedlings, a simple and solemn ceremony to worship Heaven was held, as usual. President Chen served as the officiant. He thanked God for the spring rain that nourished the fields and the fertile land, and prayed for good weather and good fortune for rice production. Then everyone went to the paddy fields to plant the rice seedlings, experiencing the philosophy of rice transplanting - 'Go ahead, by means of backward.'

“The NTU Farm was formerly the experimental farm of the Old Higher Agriculture and Forestry School, established in 1924. It has made significant contributions to the development of modern agriculture in Taiwan, both in terms of research outcome and the cultivation of agricultural talents over the years. It is also one of the pioneering sites for the breeding of Japonica rice in Taiwan,” Director Hong said. ”The farm still stands as a municipal historic site, known as the 'Old Higher Agriculture and Forestry School office (Iso House)', which served as the laboratory used by Professor Iso Eikichi, the 'father of Taiwan Japonica rice,' during the Japanese colonial period, bearing witness to the farm's century-old history.”

“Nowadays, agriculture remains the foundation for the development of a stable society. As an important center for agricultural research and education in Taiwan, NTU Farm will continue to support continuous breakthroughs and innovations in the field of agricultural research and hold activities such as rice transplanting every year to preserve and pass on traditional farming culture,” Dean Lin Yu-Pin said.
