昆蟲系發表重要論文於Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection
本系合聘教師蔡坤憲教授及名譽教授吳文哲教授共同發表文章刊登於Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection. 本文回顧十年來台灣對於貓蚤(註:狗身上的也是貓蚤) 及其攜帶之病源體立克次體(Rickettsia felis)感染的研究報告和近期新發現。內容涵蓋病原體貓立克次體、病媒跳蚤及宿主犬貓等伴侶動物和人類感染個案。想要提高人們對這種容易被忽視的病原體的認識，需要醫師、獸醫、公共衛生從業者和環境科學家一起合作，藉以預防及控制病媒昆蟲傳播疾病。此期刊為重點期刊J. Department of Entomology published an important review article in Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection
NTU Entomology Professors Wen-Jer Wu and Kun-Hsien Tsai have published a review on Rickettsia felis infections in humans. This bacterial pathogen is normally associated with cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), which infest both dogs and cats, but since its discovery in 1990 a number of human cases of "R. felis rickettsiosis" have been documented. The disease is not overly serious and can be easily treated with the antibiotic doxycycline; the problem is correctly diagnosing it. High risk individuals such as the elderly, whom are also likely to be in close proximity to companion animals, combined with an aging population mean this infection is an emerging human disease: one whose prevalence is expected to grow with time. The epidemiology of this disease and how it spreads between cats and dogs, fleas, and humans is not well understood. In northern Taiwan, 20% of cat fleas found on pets are infected, yet human infections are rarer. To prevent and control this disease, doctors, veterinarians, public health practitioners, and environmental scientists will have to work together.
