The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture student Hu, Ting-Wei Volunteered to Shoot an Introduction Video Footage

Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean Versions Uploaded on YouTube Contribute Wide Dissemination of the Footage

The introduction of a department in school can give people a clear understanding of the research content, teaching direction, faculty lineup, and student employment in the field. In the era of social media, video has become the best communication medium. While each department racks their brains to make their introduction videos, often turning to media companies for their quite amazing work despite the fortune that must be spent, the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture (hereafter the Department) student Hu, Ting-Wei has volunteered to shoot an introductory video presentation, and the English, Japanese, and Korean subtitles made by the teachers in the Department  have been uploaded to YouTube to maximize the effects of the dissemination.

Hu, Ting-Wei said, “I think I can try things that others find troublesome", so I volunteered to shoot a video about the department”. The motivation of the shooting the introduction video footage was the novel COVID-19 virus outbroke last year, which undermined a long-standing tradition of Azaleas Expo. What used to be a step-by-step activity has instantly turned into making an online Department introduction that has never been tried before. The whole world is adapting to this huge change, and I am silently trying to keep up.

Ting-Wei Hu said, I think I can try things that others find troublesome so she volunteered to shoot a video about the department.

She said, “Looking back now, the editing, framing, equipment, image quality, and sound quality of the footage looks quite unbearable”. There is still a lot of room for improvement, but I have taken that first step at least. That is what everyone finds troublesome – the beginning of the process. I think it is a step worth trying. I followed instructions online, step-by-step, basically starting from scratch since I am not familiar with it, and it took me a lot of time. After many revisions and many nights of work, I managed to give birth to it before deadline. I handed in the manuscript in a rush and didn't have much time to think about it until it happened to be seen again this year”.

After Ting-Wei shot the video, she still has to do post-production work such as editing.

As a student at the Department in National Taiwan University, Tin-Wei always hear people asking, “So, what are you studying ?” “Growing flowers… well well… Do you want to pursue a double-major ?”. Being asked such questions many times, I tried my best to explain it first, but people still didn’t know much about it. So, most of the time, I just made a polite and awkward smile to them”.

Hu, Ting-Wei said, “I was thinking, instead of focusing on the incoming high school students alone, why not make a detailed, explicit, and easy to understand video, so that people can have a better understanding of what we learn at the Department”. In this way, whenever my family gather, I just need to pass the link to my relatives for explanation. For this reason, along with the professional introduction of the professors of each group, I added some semi-podcast scenes near the end of the footage, where I asked the students to talk about the myths surrounding the Department. I hope that the footage can attract not only the attention of high school students, but also lead the general public to a better understanding of the Department”.

Besides her major in Horticulture, Ting-Wei is also interested in taking new challenges.

Hu, Ting-Wei modestly said, “I do not think I am very skillful at editing videos. There are instructions and information flowing all over the internet, and everybody is capable of self-learning”. But, I think where I am better than others is that they find learning to be troublesome, whereas I often feel that I can give it a shot. It often seems like I am not focusing on my profession, not doing something particularly useful and wasting my time, but I have always believed that, doing more, learning some, collecting every bit of extra skills can pay off one day”.

This 13-minute introduction to the Department has been uploaded to YouTube (https://youtu.be/VxkGGgo7-3k) and has received a high click-through rate, which has played a great role in promoting the Department and help connecting it with the world.

The Chairman of Department, Prof. Der-Ming Yeh was very delighted to see the great work done by Ting-Wei, especially since Ting-Wei was not trained to create such a professional-looking footage. She has successfully featured the Crop Science, the Postharvest Processing and Utilization, and the Landscape Horticulture Groups of the Department. The characteristics of the three groups are fully demonstrated in the footage, which is very valuable. Special thanks to Drs Fu-Chiun Hsu, Hyungmin Rho, and Yen-Chou Kuan for translating subtitles in English, Korean and Japanese respectively. A huge thank to Pin-Jui Chen, Wei-Chi Huang, Chin-An Hsieh and other classmates agreed to help without a doubt while working.
