Associate Professor Shih-Fang Chen’s Research Group in the Department of Biomechatronics Engineering awarded the 3rd place of AI in Agriculture, Forestry, Fishery, and Animal Husbandry of 2021 CTCI Foundation AI Innovation Competition

Associate Professor Shih-Fang Chen and her graduate students, Hsien-Feng Hsiung, Shih-Yu Lee, and Din-Ci Wang, developed “Intelligent Asparagus Growth Monitoring System,” and won the 3rd place of AI in Agriculture, Forestry, Fishery, and Animal Husbandry of 2021 CTCI Foundation AI Innovation Competition. The system integrated mechatronics technology and deep learning methods to automatically identify the asparagus growth status in greenhouse to reduce the need of labor force.

This system developed an unmanned vehicle with a high-resolution camera and a LiDAR system for field scouting and asparagus image collection. In terms of asparagus growth status identification, AI model can provide information on the number and size of the mother stalks and the young spears in the field. In order to offer an easy-to-use interface to farmers, web applications have developed to demonstrate field image records, identification results, and visualized the statistical results with date. The information could assist farmers to manage their farm in real-time and effortlessly.

 Intelligent asparagus growth monitoring system

The graduate students developing the "Intelligent asparagus growth monitoring system" have strong interests in image recognition and mechatronics technologies. They tried various cameras, controllers, and deep learning algorithms in the process, and finally established a system that accommodates a greenhouse working environment. The overall process enabled the students to learn the vital components in an interdisciplinary research: the importance of communication, considerable variations in field applications, the flexibility of rapid adjustment and cooperation. The collaborators in developing this system included the research groups from Yi-Zhu Work Station of Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Prof. Joe-Air Jiang and Assoc. Prof. Cheng-Ying Chou (Department of Biomechatronics Engineering), and Prof. Li-Yu Liu (Department of Agronomy).
